George W. Clayton Jr., of Apopka passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday May 28, 2023. Born in San Antonio, Texas on February 26, 1949, he was the son of the late Dr. George W. Clayton and Jane Granberry Clayton.
He was a graduate of The Kincaid School in Houston, Texas, Bucknell University and Wilkes University Graduate School. After graduation he was a teacher and coach in Texas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania before moving to Florida and joining the faculty of Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs. First as an English teacher and then a math teacher. George joined the LBHS Football staff as Defensive Coordinator in 1988. He moved to Offensive Coordinator and became Lake Brantley's head coach in 1996. As Head Football Coach he amassed a 153-66 Record making the playoffs in 16-19 seasons. He had 3 undefeated regular-seasons and lead the 2006 team to the State Championship game. He received numerous awards culminating in being entered into the NHSACA National Coaches Hall of Fame in 2019. More important to him than his personal and team successes were the impact he had on the young men he coached.
George is survived by his loving wife of 49 years Chris, sons George III (Skip), Joseph, and Jeffrey as well as his 2 grand-daughters Riley and Katherine, brother Bill and sister Coee.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 4th from 2-4pm at Highland Funeral Home, 3329 E. Semoran Blvd., Apopka, FL. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 5th, 10am at the Church of the Annunciation 1020 Montgomery Rd. Altamonte Springs, FL. Please assemble at church.
