Martin “Darrell” Carte, 83, of Ocklawaha, Fla., died June 15, 2024, following a long illness.
Born Dec. 7, 1940, in Flatwoods, Ky., to the late Robert “Bob” and Mary Carte, Darrell was married to Louvina (Adkins) Carte for nearly 60 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Tamara “Tammy” and Jamie. Their granddaughter, Mahalah “Haley,” great-granddaughter, Stella Rose, and dog, Holly Berry, were his greatest joys.
Darrell was a devoted “girl dad” and “Poppy” who packed lunches, cheered on activities and loved being present with a hug and a smile. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University, which led to a long career in banking in Kentucky and Florida. Among his many accomplishments included serving as past president of the Longwood-Winter Springs Chamber of Commerce as well as service to Sertoma, Rotary International and he earned the 32nd-degree Master Mason, which is the highest honor awarded by the Scottish Rite and was a past Master of Smith Lodge.
He was a Christian, who assisted with the founding of churches across Florida.
In his later years, he resided on a lake near The Villages, Fla., as he enjoyed being outdoors when he wasn’t cheering on his Kentucky Wildcats (Go Cats!).
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his loving wife, Louvina; his daughters, Tammy and Jamie; granddaughter, Haley; great-granddaughter, Stella Rose; sister, Carole Morella of Morehead, Ky.; and dog, Holly Berry.
Private services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dementia Society of America.
Arrangements are being handled by Highland Funeral Home and Memory Gardens in Forest City, Fla.
